Tag: Some List Sunday

The contents of my desk.

On Friday, I enjoyed my last day of work at my place of employment. I start at the new place tomorrow, which is very exciting.

I’d been so busy with my remaining work over my notice period, that it didn’t really sink in until some time on Friday afternoon that I wouldn’t be back there. Which of course, made me start feeling a bit sad about the whole thing.

I brought some cakes for the office, and packed up my desk into a carrier bag over the course of the afternoon. I’m not sure if it’s depressing or efficient that almost a year of my working life¬†can be packed up into a single carrier bag. So, I decided to sum up my desk contents into a list:

  1. Note books and pens.
  2. A pink USB desk fan.
  3. An A3 portable white board and dry wipe markers.
  4. A USB drive.
  5. My coffee mug.

Really, it’s all I ever need at a desk to get the work done. Though my Charisma Fallout 3 Bobblehead may make it to my new desk on Monday. ūüėÄ

To sum up – I’m sad to be going, but very excited about what’s ahead. Plus, my desk needs to be cooler. I should probably buy more fans. (Ha ha!)

3 times a computer game got me right in the feels.

Some computer games have a way of spinning the story in a way that sometimes really hits you. Here are my top 3.

  1. When Alys died in Phantasy Star 4. She was too cool for that to happen.
  2. Coming across the sewage works that had been converted into a settlement in The Last of Us. As you go through the area and find a small room behind a locked door, with 2 small skeletons and one large one. Next to the larger skeleton is a shotgun and a note. Turns out someone left the door open, and the zombies got in. The note mentions that the writer had saved 3 bullets.
  3. Fallout 4. In a rangers shack close to Sanctuary, you can find a diary next to a body. It’s a girl who was kicked out by her parents for being pregnant right before the bombs fell.
  • For those wondering why I haven’t listed Aeris dying in Final Fantasy 7, it’s because I was more annoyed than saddened. I’d gotten her final limit break, and she gets herself stabbed. Hmph!

My Top 5 David Bowie tracks

I’m not normally one to comment on celebrity, but this week has brought news of a few rather high profile deaths. As such, I have spent a lot of the week listening to David Bowie outside of my usual playlists.

There’s not much to I can say here that wouldn’t sound completely trite. Obviously, I never knew him personally. The mans accomplishments were off the scale, so I’m simply going to¬†list my current top 5 favourite songs by David Bowie*:

  1. Heroes
  2. Ashes to Ashes
  3. Oh You Pretty Things
  4. Fame
  5. I’m afraid of Americans

* I say current, because my favourite changes a lot. Plus, he did an insane amount of great music.

Things I’ve done in Fallout 4

Following the main story is for wimps. Here is what I’ve been up to since I started playing yesterday:

  • Started making settlements. Everywhere I can.
  • Using said settlements, I have started my purified water empire.
  • Cooking all the things.
  • I found a legendary rolling pin off a legendary enemy. This is now being upgraded and will be my main melee weapon.
  • I upset Codsworth a lot by feeding up the granny with loads of drugs.

Main story line? What main story line? I’m level 10, and I’ve only advanced it so far as arriving at Diamond City. So long, life!

5 ways I was woken up early over the holidays.

I like my sleep. The blokes children assure me that sleep is boring, and holidays are certainly *not* the time to be sleeping.

So – here are the ways I was informed I could not have a lie in over the holidays:

  1. Small children jumping on me. Ow.
  2. Small children whispering in the doorway about who is going to wake me up versus who is going to wake up Daddy.
  3. “I’m hungry!”
  4. Dustbin truck outside, throwing all the glass bottles in with a satisfying crash. At 6am.
  5. “Can we play with the ponies now?”

I need a holiday.

5 things I am smug about

Smugness overload. I am currently feeling smug about:

  • I have finished my Christmas shopping.
  • I have wrapped all the Christmas shopping.
  • I have plenty of homemade chutney to supplement all the gifts.
  • I even finished off the Christmas cards.
  • No more Christmas rush for me until next year! Hoorah!

My 5 favourite words

Yup, I am sad enough to have favourite words. Here they are:

  1. Lethologica. The inability to remember a word or put your finger on the right word. How cool is it that there is a word for this? Especially one that in itself is more difficult than some to remember?
  2. Spaghettification. The theoretical stretching of an object as it encounters extreme¬†differences in gravitational forces, especially those associated with a¬†black hole.¬†Just the meaning behind this, being so far away from that you’d expect, makes it awesome.
  3. Acatalepsy. An ancient¬†skeptical view that no more than probable knowledge is¬†available to human beings.¬†It’s a word that sums up the attitude of ‘It’s been done, so never try’.
  4. Cockalorum. A self-important little man. We’ve all met many. There are plenty in our government. It’s pretty awesome that it is summed up in a word.
  5. Hebetude. The state of being dull. I have this upon waking up every morning.

5 Silly things I did this week

I occasionally do very silly things. This week has been worse than most. I’m not sure why.

  1. When making custard tarts, I carefully measured out the butter I needed, and went to put the remaining butter back in the fridge. Except I didn’t put it in the fridge. I put it in the bin.
  2. I went to empty the bin, and forgot to take my keys out with me, locking myself out. Luckily, I had a window open, so I was able to get back into my flat. I got covered in cobwebs and all sorts, and sprained my wrist with this little adventure.
  3. Put the timer on my washing machine so that it would do a load over night. Neglected to check the program, and woke up the next morning to washing that had only been through a dry cycle, and nothing else.
  4. Neglected to check if the bloke actually likes custard tarts (since he generally eats everything). Later found out that of all the sweet things out there, he actually has a hatred of custard tarts. Oops! More for me, I guess!
  5. Forgot to add the tuna to the tuna pasta bake. I realised half way through, and added it later. Thankfully, it still tasted good.

5 Awesome Cover Songs

Some cover songs are so awesome, they just deserve a mention. Here are my current favourites:

Inspirational Quotes from Fiction

I love me some good inspirational quotes. Instead of going for the mainstream ones from random famous and occasionally awesome people, I thought I’d share my favourite ones from the various books I read that have stuck with me over the years. I’ll do my best to attribute the right quote to the right book. Corrections welcome!

  • “Until you learn to laugh at yourself, your life will always be a tragedy”. – Polgara the Sorceress, David Eddings.
  • “I don’t care about whose DNA has recombined with whose. When everything goes to hell, the people who stand by you without flinching – they are your family.” – Proven Guilty, Jim Butcher
  • “We are always more afraid than we wish to be, but we can always be braver than we expect.” – Lord of Chaos, Robert Jordan
  • “You can’t go around building a better world for people. Only people can build a better world for people. Otherwise it’s just a cage.” – Witches Abroad, Terry Pratchett
  • “Just when you’ve squared up to the solemn realisation that life is a bitch, it turns around and does something nice, just to confuse you.” – The Better Mousetrap, Tom Holt
